Pulling from a variety of backgrounds in industries such as non-profit, education, law, and finance, the Turning Pages board of directors has been able to shape and sustain the organization over the past 50 years.

Meet Our Board

Miriam Calamaro
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Miriam Calamaro earned a Master of Arts in Teaching and a Bachelor of Science in Teacher Education from Columbia International University (CIU). Miriam was born in Lexington, SC, but lived much of her life in South Korea where her father taught an International Christian School. Miriam’s decision to pursue a career in education grew from her love of reading, observing her father, and her interaction with her inspiring fourth grade teacher. As a high school student in South Korea, Miriam taught Sunday School and tutored children in English. Miriam’s education, life experiences, and enthusiasm for our mission are ushering in an exciting period for Turning Pages.

Steve Riley
TREASURER
Steve Riley serves as the Treasurer for Turning Pages. Steve is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) who practices as the Audit Director at Barb & Company, PA – a local firm in Columbia, South Carolina. He has worked in public accounting for 10+ years, most of which at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Washington D.C. Steve has served on the board since August 2015.

Chris Keefer
CHAIR
Chris Keefer has been a Turning Pages tutor since 2016 and is happy to be serving as the organization’s chairman. After a long career in technical writing and editing, she is now in the midst of a second career in local government administration. Chris currently works as director of Richland County’s Government & Community Services department, which builds partnerships with citizens, nonprofits, and other constituent groups. Natives of Pittsburgh (Go Steelers!), Chris and her husband Jay now live in Blythewood, SC.

Dr. Jennifer Almeda
BOARD MEMBER
Dr. Jennifer Almeda began with Turning Pages as a tutor in November 2010 and joined as a board member in October 2018. She completed a BA in in International Studies at the College of Saint Elizabeth (1999), an MA in Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University and an MS in International Business (2001), and completed her PhD in International Business at the University of South Carolina (2012). Dr. Almeda brings a wide range of practical and theoretical knowledge and experience to the board, gained from over twenty years of work experience all over the world, including being employed at the UN headquarters, and serving in the United States Peace Corps. She has served as adjunct professor, interpreter, translator, recruiter, outreach worker, and state coordinator for USC and the SC Department of Education. Much of her work and research has been focused around literacy, particularly of bilingual populations and she is delighted to share the wisdom and knowledge she has gained with the Turning Pages board now.

Janie Kronk
BOARD MEMBER
Janie Kronk holds a Bachelor’s Degree from The Ohio State University and Master’s Degree from Clemson University. A registered architect and adjunct instructor for Midlands Technical College, Janie lives in Columbia with her husband and daughter. She is pleased to be part of Turning Pages’ mission to support literacy in the Midlands by serving both as a board member and as a tutor for the organization.

Tiffiany Moore
BOARD MEMBER
Tiffiany Moore is an Employment Specialist with over a decade of experience working within the intricacies of assisting people living with lifelong disabilities for the largest service provider in SC. A former literacy instructor, she enjoys seeing others maximize their potential and reach their goals. Outside of work she splits her time between her family and volunteering with various organizations. She has been married for 22 years with six daughters. Presently, she is also pursuing a degree in Health & Human Services and looks forward to using it to help improve the lives of others.

Dr. Saundra Carr
BOARD MEMBER
Dr. Saundra Carr is a native South Carolinian, graduate of Walden University, and founder of the nonprofit, Communities Empowered for Change. She has been involved in South Carolina state government for over three decades as an experienced Program Coordinator for the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education (CHE). This has afforded her the opportunity to work with various sectors of the community and the P-20 education system. Because of her commitment as a change agent and a community activist, Dr. Carr has also had the privilege of serving as Vice Chair for the Richland Country Democratic Party for two consecutive terms. She is active in her church, has one son, and is the proud grandmother of a twenty-five year old US Marine.

Amber Peoples
BOARD MEMBER
Amber Peoples currently works as the Data Specialist for the Migrant Education Program in the SC Department of Education Federal Accountability Department. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and a Master’s (completed in October of last year) in Intercultural Studies. Amber has seven years experience working with nonprofits and government agencies. In addition, she has international experience working in community research and development. Amber’s passion for cultures, languages, social media, and helping people with the skills and experiences God has granted her, is an invaluable asset to the Turning Pages’ board.

Peggy Miller
BOARD MEMBER
Peggy Miller is honored to tutor and serve as tutor support on the board of Turning Pages. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Winthrop University and Master’s degree from the University of Connecticut. She is a retired special education and adult education teacher with 23 years of experience in the public schools. As a lifelong learner, she enjoys sharing her love of reading with others. When not reading or tutoring, Peggy can be found kayaking, gardening, or enjoying life in the mountains. She is married, has two grown children, and two grandsons.
